Abstract
Formative assessment — evaluation intended to guide ongoing learning rather than certify outcomes — is particularly powerful in programming education, where learners benefit from rapid, specific feedback on executable artefacts. This chapter surveys strategies ranging from automated test-suite feedback and peer code review to reflective journals and office-hour protocols. We synthesise empirical evidence for each approach, discuss implementation considerations for large enrolments, and offer a practical framework for selecting and combining strategies based on course context, instructor capacity, and student experience level.
