Equitable Autograding Policies for Programming Assignments: Late Work, Resubmission, and Feedback Timing

Abstract

Autograders shape student work patterns through policy choices as much as through test results. This paper compares late-penalty, resubmission-limit, and feedback-delay policies across archival traces from four programming courses. Flexible resubmission policies improved eventual correctness without increasing final-hour submission spikes, while delayed feedback disproportionately affected students with less prior programming experience.
